About SporkSports

SporkSports is the web site for Brandon Smith, currently residing in Chandler, Arizona. I started this website some time in 2001 as an outlet for my non-automotive photography and for just general stuff about myself. I had been hosting exclusively car related things on my other website, Autocrossing.com which I no longer update. Better still is that I left this particular "About" page unmodified pretty much from the day I created it in 2001 until October 2007.

Since my SporkSports page only averages about 1 visitor to the about page per day, I could never really get motivated to update something that was only clicked on a couple dozen times a month and which people probably only read perhaps ten times a year. Besides which, anyone who knows me already knows this is my website anyway.

The name was chosen as a fun play on words of SpoonSports, a Japanese company which makes all sorts of go-fast parts for Hondas. They're one of those funny companies that even though a lot of folks has heard of them, hardly anybody has ever seen a real Spoon part. I figured it would relate somewhat to myself since even though there is the potential for hundreds of people around the world to see my site, I'll meet maybe about a dozen or so people in the real world in an average year.

Just as it was back in 2001, this website continues to be created and maintained entirely by the "vi" editor in linux. I create the pages on my home linux system (then a 200Mhz Pentium, now a 533Mhz VIA C3) and when it looks good, I SCP everything from the linux host to the actual hosting company that puts the website on the internet. I felt like this was a horribly low-tech way to design a website back in 2001 and nowadays I don't even think I want to know how low-tech it must seem.

So what's in store for the future of SporkSports? Well who knows. I started blogging on here when I launched the website, only to find that apparently blogging was quite trendy and to be honest, all the real blogging websites seemed way cooler and easier to use than making HTML text files in vi so I eventually quit doing it. Now I even have a Myspace page, which is a big part of why I stopped updating SporkSports. I think that in the long run however, the power of the Spork is greater than my Myspace page.

Finally, although I rarely do respond to emails, you can email me if you'd like. My email address is simply my first name at my other website name, listed above in this page.
